Parent/Guardian Book Opt-Out Information

Welcome

Dear Parent/Guardian,

North Carolina's House Bill 805 gives parents the right to identify titles from the school library catalog and classroom libraries that may not be borrowed by your child.

Parent/Guardian Responsibility and Acknowledgment

  • It is their responsibility to review the school and classroom library catalogs to identify titles for restriction and to complete the required steps for restricted access.

  • Restrictions apply only to the titles listed. All other titles remain available.

  • Opting out does not remove the book(s) from the school or classroom collection; it only prevents their child from accessing or checking them out.

Classroom Library Opt-Out Information

Classroom libraries are curated by individual teachers and may differ by class. Parents/guardians are encouraged to review available book lists (when provided by the teacher) before completing this process.

Book lists can be accessed:

  • Through the School Webpage, parents/guardians may select their child’s school and access available classroom library catalogs.

Steps to Opt Out of Classroom Library Titles:

  1. Review your child’s classroom library list.

  2. Identify the specific titles you do not want your child to access.

  3. Complete the Parent/Guardian Book Opt-Out Form (link below).

    • Be sure to include the teacher’s name and the exact titles to be restricted.

  4. Submit the form. Restrictions will apply only to the titles listed for that teacher’s classroom library.
